Amphibian Surveys & Habitat Assessments
Amphibian surveys can only be undertaken at certain times of the year, during spring from mid March until mid June. Habitat assessments can be undertaken at all times of the year. However, these may recommend a spring survey, generally if there is a pond or other suitable breeding site within 500 metres the site. The surveys are generally spaced over the spring survey period to provide a good population size class assessment or to determine the presence or absence of a species.
Great crested newts and natterjack toad (see photograph below) surveys have to be undertaken under the appropriate licence. Surveyors are experts in their field and follow standard survey methods set by English Nature.

The more common amphibians include smooth newt (see photograph below), palmate newt, common frog and common toad.
